Burgers and Bozo

Clown at hamburger jointPhnom Penh doesn't have any actual Western franchise fast food operations except for a Dairy Queen which opened at the airport last year.  But that doesn't mean there aren't any imitators, especially of McDonald's.  Two operations, both with several locations, have copied McDonald's red and yellow colors, restaurant layout, and the type of tables and chairs.  BB World has gone even farther. Its logo is McDonald's golden arches turned upside down.  And tonight I found that they even have their version of Ronald McDonald.  I almost never eat in BB World--or its competitor Lucky Burger, but tonight I decided I would, and when I walked in I found a magician and his sidekick clown entertaining a group of fifteen or so children in a back corner of the restaurant! That really surprised me, but I guess it's something like that that might give them a slight marketing edge as the word spreads among the few people who have the money to go to BB World or Lucky Burger.
