New Year Street Scenes

April, 2011

Technically according to government policy, tomorrow (Monday) is also an official holiday because of the three days of the New Year holiday fell on a Saturday.  Practically, though, many people will need to be back at work tomorrow so there was a bit more traffic today as people started to return from the provinces.  These are scenes from Phnom Penh on the way to and from St. Joseph Church where we had a Palm Sunday liturgy this morning.

A little something for everyone

I don't know where this family was going but they certainly had all forms of transportation crammed into their tuk-tuk--along with themselves!
Youth in a truck

These young people were probably going to some New Year holiday activity.
More people traveling

These people were crammed into a truck heading out of town.  They may have been some of the few people who came TO Phnom Penh for the holiday, and now it's time for them to go back to the provinces.
Waiting for customers

Many of the little "gas station" spots were closed for the holidays, but this young woman was sticking it out, waiting for customers at a junction where two streets come together.
Picking up garbage

Some of the people who really work in Phnom Penh, and especially through the holidays, are the Cintri garbage collection crews.  I doubt they earn very much but they should really be compensated well for the difficult work they do during the holidays and throughout the year.
A homeless man

If you're a homeless person, it doesn't make much difference whether it is a holiday or not or if the shops are open or not.
