Second Rain of the Year in Cambodia
21 March 2007

Don't worry, I'm not going to chronicle every rain that we have here in Phnom Penh, but we had an overnight rain--our second--in the early hours of Tuesday before dawn, and it made quite a mess at our house. The first rain was quite light, and this second one, starting about 11:00 PM Monday night, began with little more than a shower, too. But during the night, it must have got a lot heavier because when I woke up, there was muddy water all over the floor and a real mess on Ed's desk and our dining room table which is under the window.

Dirty water on Ed's desk

The biggest mess was on Ed's desk where dirty water collected on the desk top. Here is a plastic-covered annual report with lots of water and muddy marks on it. The clean space around the photograph is where another book was on top of the report and kept the rain off that part.

Rain water on floor

It must have rained fairly hard and been rather windy for so much water to come in. There were even pools of brownish water on the floor. My theory is that all the dust of the dry season was caked on the screens, and this first of the rains strong enough to blow through the windows created the muddy flow.

Water streaks on the wall
In my room, there were muddy water streaks down the wall under the window. Luckily my computer desk is about three feet from the window so it got only a few splatters from the times of the heaviest winds blowing the rain into the house.
