Work in Cambodia: Construction

December, 2011

Labor in Cambodia operates on a different scale from that of more developed countries. A lot of the work here is done by hand and performed with the most simple handtools. There is a boom in construction in Cambodia now and many unskilled young men have found jobs as simple laborers. Most of them carry bricks and sand and cement. Some of them have work requiring at least minimal skill and attention such as these young men working on reinforcing rod (rebar). The men in the first two rows are working with new steel but the others are straightening out old rebar salvaged from buildings torn down. A lot of work went into breaking up the concrete walls and columns to remove the rebar that was inside the concrete, and then it's brought to these men to work on it so it can be reused.
