Sihanoukville Retreat
11-13 February 2005

The Catholic church in Sihanoukville is somewhat remarkable because it is one of only two Catholic church buildings that survived the Khmer Rouge. I have heard that there were 120+ Catholic churches in Cambodia before Pol Pot and his ultra-communists took over. Some churches, such as the cathedral in Phnom Penh, were very deliberately targeted and destroyed. I am not aware of why or how the Sihanoukville church was able to escape destruction.
