Morning Rituals: Sitting

28 February 2012

Every culture has its rituals and Cambodia has its share of them. One of the early morning rituals for a lot of people is just sitting out on the street watching the world go by as the morning gets brighter but before the sun rises. These are pictures of some of the people in Phnom Penh sitting outside in the early morning.

Man sitting in front of his house
This man is awake and the day has begun, but just barely. He's listening to his radio before going in to get dressed and take the car out of the living room. (Notice the license plate between the gates.)

Women in front of a shop
These two women, maybe from the same family, sit in front of the same house but still maintain their private space.

This woman's house has set a concrete bench out on the sidewalk and the lady takes advantage of it to watch the world.

This elderly woman sits on the sidewalk with a younger woman, probably her daughter.

This man is sitting in front of some sort of shop of which he is proprietor. He has rolled up the steel gate and rolled his counter to the front of the shop, but doesn't seem entirely open for business yet.

This woman takes advantage of a quiet moment with two of her children or maybe grandchildren before the pace of the day changes to something a lot more active.
