Concrete Pumpers

23 May 2012

While much of the world's economy is experiencing the effects of a burst property bubble, Cambodia's building industry is booming. Some of the 30+ stories high-rise commercial buildings are stalled but the four-, five-, and six-floor housing blocks are going up everywhere. Cambodian people don't trust banks--too many of them have failed--and a safe place to put any money is in real estate. The locals build and hope the foreigners will rent. One facet of this boom has been the arrival of concrete pumpers. There probably wasn't one in the country when I arrived twelve years ago. Now they are everywhere.
