Valentine's Day

14 February 2016

Valentine's Day is another of the Western-based holidays or celebrations that have appeared in Cambodian society--much to the consternation of some of the elders. There is little sense of values in society after the Khmer Rouge era and officials and civic leaders and teachers feel--often rightly so--that imported holidays like Valentine's Day create an environment that overshadows the values and traditions of the country. Here are some scenes from around Phnom Penh today as various people try to make some money from young lovers. There were lots of flowers and balloons and stuffed animals in sight. Not so much candy like chocolates which would be destroyed by the heat.
