Christmas Activities in Phnom Penh, 2011

December, 2011

Sometimes people in western countries lament that they find it difficult to get into the Christmas mood because of work or other distractions.  To fully appreciate that feeling, or lack of it, one should come to Cambodia.  I have to stop and think sometimes what month it is, much less about some particular holiday that isn't celebrated or supported by the culture.  Most urban Cambodian's have heard of Christmas but for them it is a time to celebrate some fat man dressed in a red suit and maybe to give gifts.  There is no understanding of the religious meaning of Christmas.

Here are some of the indicators of the Christmas season in Phnom Penh this year.

Signs of the Season
Decorating the Sisters' House
Combined Christmas Service
Salesian Girls School Christmas Bazaar
LaValla School Christmas Celebration
Christmas Mass at World Vision
Christmas Mass at St. Joseph Church
Maryknoll Christmas Dinner
