Maryknoll Church Talks

18 June 2006

The twelth station

Dayton, Ohio

The second of the talks about mission in US parishes was in Dayton, Ohio, at Queen of Apostles parish. This group started out as an informal gathering on the campus of the Marianist community but has now become an official non-territorial parish within the diocese. They have only one mass per weekend, at 10:30 on Sunday mornings, with an attendance of about 300. The one mass was quite a contrast with last Sunday's four masses in three different towns in north Texas.
Setting up for a reception before mass
Queen of Apostles community has a strong tradition of involvement and leadership by the lay community. Here several volunteers set up in the lobby for a reception to be held after mass.
Setting up before mass
Other ministers prepare tables for welcoming the arriving parishioners. Queen of Angels also has a number of deaf people who worship with the community each week, aided by sign language interpreters. The man in white is deaf.
Choir practice before mass
The choir this weekend is their "summer choir," a group of volunteers because so many of the regulars are away on vacation. They came quite early for a practice. The sign language interpreter (right, in black) also practiced the hymns.
Brother Don Neff explaining the creche collection
After mass, Brother Don Neff, one of the administrators of the Marianist campus, showed my sister Martha and three of her children the collection of more than 1200 nativity scenes in storage at the center. Martha and her husband Mark and their children drove up from Cincinnati for the mass.
