Trip to Thailand
and United States

July-August, 2009

6 July 2009 (Monday)

I arrived in Bangkok at 9:15 PM last night after a short flight from Phnom Penh. I stayed at the Maryknoll office which has two guest rooms and I was the only one there. This morning I had to be at BNH Hospital at 8:00 AM for an annual physical examination that can't be done in Cambodia. Today was the first of three Buddhist holidays so the traffic was very light and I arrived near the hospital quickly.

Because I had time, I walked around the Din Daeng area of Bangkok before going to the hospital. Bangkok is noted for the thousands of food vendors selling all kinds of food on the streets. These vendors were chopping up various fruits to sell. Preparing food to sell
This woman, with two customers waiting, was grilling heavily buttered bread and then sprinkling something on it. Many people eat breakfast and lunch on the streets.

These two women, both wearing shirts from the same company, ate breakfast together before heading to work.

I was at BNH Hospital for a series of tests and examinations from 7:45 AM to 12:30 PM. BNH Hospital sign
Today is the eve of a major Buddhist holiday celebrating what would be the equivalent of Christian Lent. This young man was making an offering at a shine on the hospital grounds.

Because the schools were closed for the holidays, this little boy's pre-school was not having classes. His father, the bus driver, had no holiday, though, so his son sat on the engine cover and rode the streets of Bangkok with his father all day. Child riding in bus
