Trip to Thailand
and United States

July-August, 2009

17 July 2009 (Friday)

Today was a travel day, from Maryknoll in Ossining to the White Plains airport nearby, then a change of planes in Washington, DC, then a second flight to Raleigh, North Carolina, and then a rental car drive to Pinehurst, North Carolina.
The White Plains airport (also known as Westchester County airport) is about ten miles from Maryknoll, and I was lucky to have Dave Loretan drive me there at 7:45 this morning, saving $50+ in taxi fares.  The airport is nice and in good condition but is totally inadequate for the traffic it handles because it serves the world headquarters of IBM and many other big international corporations.  United Airlines' hub on East Coast is Dulles International (IAD) in Washington, DC, so I had a propjet flight to Dulles to make a connection.
Washington Dulles airport
Dulles is a major international airport handing a lot of connections to Europe as well as many domestic connections for United. In many ways it is like most big international airports, but it is somewhat unique in its people-moving system, getting passengers from one terminal to another. Dulles uses these large shoeboxes-on-wheels to shuttle people across the ramp and apron areas of the airport for a quick passage from one terminal to another. At first glance, it seems a rather inefficient way to move large numbers of people but it seems to work fairly well.

North Carolina is a green and verdant state with lots of trees and lakes, a welcome change from Cambodia. I flew into Raleigh-Durham airport, and then rented a car for the 95-mile trip to Pinehurst. I found Sacred Heart Church where I will be preaching and then went to supper with Fr. Bill Pitts, the pastor and a classmate of mine.
