Trip to Thailand
and United States

July-August, 2009

29 July 2009 (Wednesday)

Today was a day with a lot of running around. I drove into town with my sister Mary so I could use her car, and then went to pick up my baptism certificate at the chancery office, then went to the Social Security office to get some questions answered about my signing up for that and Medicare, and then to my cousin Judith English's house to say hello.

In the afternoon I stopped at my sister Mary's office and then went to the offices of the Louisville Courier-Journal newspaper for an interview. Then in the evening it was back downtown for a gathering of former students from the old St. Thomas Seminary in Louisville.

Peter Smith is the religion editor for the Louisville Courier-Journal newspaper.  Learning that Charlie was in town, he asked for an interview to talk about Cambodia and the deaf work there.

Because of the Kentucky Derby, horses are a big part of the culture of Kentucky.  Several years ago these fiberglass models were bought and decorated and displayed by various businesses in a show of civic pride.  This one is in the lobby of the Courier-Journal.

A permanent feature on the Louisville waterfront is the Belle of Louisville, an old paddle-wheel steamer that still goes up and down the river on short jaunts.

In the evening about 80 former students of St. Thomas Seminary in Louisville--and some of their wives--gathered at the Galt House for what had developed from a simple dinner of friends into a mini reunion.  Charlie Dittmeier and Chuck Bauer had a quick bite to eat together.

Bea and Joe Griffey, Yib, and Joe Payne and Charlie Dittmeier got together for a photograph during the gathering. Bea and Yib are from Thailand and had a chance to talk to Charlie about his work and visits there.
