Board of Directors Meeting

Margo Cambier

This was the second meeting of the year for the Maryknoll Lay Missioners Board of Directors.  The first was an online meeting teleconferencing over the Internet.  This meeting was held at the Bethany headquarters of the Maryknoll Lay Missioners.

Each board meeting begins with an education session, to help the board members learn more about Maryknoll and the Maryknoll Lay Missioners.  For this meeting, Dr. Ann Carr, the chair of the Affiliates advisory board, and Fred Goddard, the director of the Affiliates, presented the history and operations of the Affiliates to the MKLM board.  Participating in the presentation process is Mike Noonan of the MKLM Board of Directors.

Each working day of the board meeting began with a liturgy.  The first was led by Fr. Bill Vos, the MKLM board chair.  Seated near him are Sam Stanton and Cecilia Espinoza.

On Friday, the board went to the seminary building for lunch.  Meals with the other sending groups of Maryknoll (the fathers and brothers and the sisters) build relationships and help to facilitate communications and collaboration.  Here Fr. Jack King, an avid photographer, speaks to some of the board.
Lunch at the seminary
After lunch the full board went to the Walsh Building, one of the original buildings from Maryknoll's beginnings.  Formerly the home of the Maryknoll social communications offices, the building is now being prepared to become the headquarters of the Maryknoll Lay Missioners who will move next year from their Bethany building.
The Walsh Building
The interior of the building will be completely redone.  The renovations have been hampered by extremely restrictive building codes and requirements which prevent adding extra doors to the outside for safety sake and which will force some of the floor space to be available only for storage.
Touring the Walsh Building
The board listened to presentations from all the different departments of the Maryknoll Lay Missioners operations.  Here the Advancement department explained their plans for maintaining adequate revenue for the organization.
Board meeting
The board meeting ended on Saturday morning and there was an immediate rush to various airports and train stations in the area.  The keyboard in the main hall of Bethany indicates the departure of the board members, the keys to their rooms now back on the board and waiting to be picked up when Bethany staff return on Monday.
