Trip to United States

5 June to 7 July 2011

8 June 2011 (Wednesday)

This Wednesday was a long day, starting at 2:45 AM in Bangkok and ending about midnight in Ossining, New York, with about 25 hours of flying in between, made possible by crossing the International Date Line.

In Bangkok, Maryknoll has an office with two guest rooms upstairs where Maryknollers in transit can spend the night.  I stayed in this room three nights on this trip.  I hate changing the sheets on the big bed, especially at 3:00 AM, so I often just take an extra sheet, fold it in half, and sleep in it like a sleeping bag on top of the bed. It works rather well for me!

In the Tokyo Narita airport, this wi-fi station has a sign saying "Free wi-fi sponsored by Google," but in reality it is just the free table that Google offers.  Connecting to one of the available commercial wi-fi networks requires a hefty payment by credit card.

This is a monitor at the Chicago O'Hare airport showing those people who are waitlisted for an upgrade to first class.  Because I'm Premier status with United, my name often goes up here (it's #15 on this list) but it's all rather an empty offer because there are a lot more people eligible for the empty first class seats than actually get them.

I finally got to Maryknoll, New York, near Ossining, about 11:00 PM.  This time the building manager has put me in one of the apartments because I will be here for almost a month.  I checked out the refrigerator and it was empty as I expected, but I found that the freezer had 3" to 4" of ice in the compartment.  Since it was empty, I decided to let it defrost overnight and put out a bunch of pots and pans to catch the dripping water.  The towel holds open the door of the freezer compartment.
