New Year's Day

16 April 2015

Today was the third day of the Khmer New Year. Tomorrow is officially a work day and it will be interesting to see who shows up!

A row of closed shops

It is hard to imagine how empty Phnom Penh is! The locals all go to their home villages. The foreigners head to Sihanoukville's beaches or, if they have more money, to Bangkok or Ho Chi Minh City.
Passing the day alone

This man isn't going anywhere and is just passing the day sitting alone on the sidewalk outside his house and shop.
A new year gift of sticky rice

The new year is a time for gift-giving and we Maryknollers living at the office weren't forgotten! One of our guards gave me these two packages of sweet sticky rice, wrapped as securely and efficiently as any commercial product. We could learn something from the traditional skills of the local people. Nothing is wasted and there is no non-degradable trash.
Kids playing in an empty street

On the street in front of the Maryknoll office, some kids play in the empty street with a background of Cambodian flags set out for the holidays. Cambodians are a flag-waving society, like the United States.
